Economies of scale
Economies of scale exist when producing more lowers the average cost per unit — through bulk buying, specialised labour, or spreading fixed costs over more output.
Key ideas
- Internal economies come from the firm's own growth; external ones come from the whole industry.
- Beyond a point, diseconomies of scale set in as coordination gets harder.
- They help explain why some industries are dominated by a few large firms.
